ECU remapping for refrigerated trucks: fuel and cooling on long hauls

CHIPTUNINGECUREEFERSFLEETS

What changes when you remap a reefer that crosses half of Europe: torque to hold speed under load, diesel use and the cooling unit.

A reefer is not just another truck

A reefer runs loaded almost all the time, climbs mountain passes and drags the weight of the cooling unit along. The engine spends hours asking for steady torque, not peaks. That is exactly where a well-planned remap changes the daily job: you hold speed uphill without downshifting as much, and the engine works more comfortably in its good torque band. It is not about going faster, it is about arriving just as fast while asking less of the engine.

Low-rpm torque is what moves a loaded reefer

With 24 tonnes and the cooling unit running, what counts is not peak horsepower but torque at 1,000-1,400 rpm. A custom remap raises that torque and delivers it earlier. In practice the truck holds the higher gear on a climb where you used to downshift, and that lowers revs and noise for hours on the road.

The cooling unit weighs on fuel use too

A cooling unit with its own engine has its own diesel, but the reefer drags that weight and resistance the whole trip. By optimising the drive engine for cruising, the whole rig runs cleaner on the motorway. In fleets we have tuned, the real long-haul saving is around 5-8% of the drive engine's diesel when the driver keeps a steady pace.

Euro 6, tachograph and warranty: what we check

Before touching a company reefer we check three things: that the tune respects the Euro 6 emissions system without disabling AdBlue or EGR, that it does not interfere with the tachograph, and the vehicle's warranty status. We always save the original software. For a fleet, we document everything so the fleet manager has a clear picture.

Does remapping damage the cooling unit?

No. A trailer's cooling unit usually has its own diesel engine, independent of the truck's ECU. We work on the drive engine, not the cooling unit. The load's cold chain is not affected.

How much diesel do you really save on long hauls?

It depends on the route and the driver, but on long, steady routes we see 5 to 8% savings on the drive engine. In a high-mileage fleet that shows up on the monthly bill. With aggressive driving the saving disappears.

Does the truck lose its warranty?

If the vehicle is under manufacturer warranty, a remap can affect it. That is why we save the original software and can put it back before an official service. We assess it by the age and contract of each fleet.

Is it compatible with Euro 6 and the tachograph?

Yes. We make tunes that respect the emissions system and do not tamper with the tachograph. We do not disable AdBlue or EGR: that is illegal on the road and we do not do it.

Every engine and vehicle is different. Figures are indicative and depend on mechanical condition. RecuAuto always saves the original software before any intervention.
