A motorhome or campervan on a Ducato, Sprinter or Transit leaves the factory with the same engine as the delivery van, but it weighs far more: water, gas, furniture, bikes and the holiday luggage push the whole thing close to 3.5 tonnes. At that weight, the 2.3 diesel with 130 or 140 hp runs short as soon as the road climbs, and the trip turns into crawling up a pass at 60 km/h with the engine screaming. When someone brings their camper in to be remapped, they are not after speed, they want to climb the passes without struggling and use a little less over the thousands of kilometres of a summer. A custom remap tunes exactly that, without touching the emissions system.
The weak point of a camper on a van base is the mountain pass with all the weight on board. As standard, the Ducato's 2.3 MultiJet or the Transit's 2.0 run out of breath on the climb, and you have to drop to second or third with the engine at 3,500 or 4,000 rpm just to keep moving. With a custom remap we work the torque low down, between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, which is where a motorhome spends its life. On a 140 hp Ducato 2.3 we usually move to around 175-180 hp with far more torque low down, and the whole thing climbs the pass in a taller gear, more steadily and without punishing the engine so much. You notice it most when loaded and on long climbs.
A motorhome covers few kilometres a year, but it does them all at once: a summer trip is 3,000 or 4,000 km almost back to back, much of it on the motorway loaded to the roof. There fuel use shoots up, because the engine is short on power and the driver presses harder than they think. With more torque available low down, the camper holds cruising speed with less throttle and fewer gear changes, and with steady driving fuel use drops by around 5 to 8%. Over a 4,000 km trip that is quite a few tanks less. The saving comes from not thrashing the engine, not from going faster.
A camper is the family's holiday home, so reliability comes first. That is why we stay conservative: we set the torque to what the engine, clutch and gearbox take with margin in continuous, loaded use, not at bench maximum. Many Ducato and Transit campers run an automatic or automated gearbox, and there we are especially careful not to overdo the torque and punish the transmission. We do not touch the AdBlue, the EGR or the DPF: disabling them is illegal, and many European countries run roadside emissions checks, right where a motorhome travels. We always save the original map to put it back before an official service or a roadworthiness test.

We do not touch the DPF or the emissions system, so the camper passes its roadworthiness test normally. We save the original map in case it needs putting back before an official service. It is worth telling your insurer about any power change so it is on record.
